Hey, Unfiltered Facts community! I’m honoured to share my journey as a youth advocate with the Ward 10 Youth Council.
Youth Advocacy and Making a Difference
Joining the Ward 10 Youth Council was my way of engaging with my city and making a positive impact in my community. Little did I know that my experiences would take me beyond meetings and discussions, straight into the heart of an urgent issue – youth vaping.
Annoying Encounters: Vaping in School Washrooms
One day, I walked into the school washroom, expecting it to be a quick and routine visit. To my alarm, I found myself in an unsettling scene of students vaping. It became clear that the washrooms had turned into spaces where students indulged in unhealthy behaviours, affecting the overall atmosphere of the school. It created a sense discomfort, and I was frustrated that I had to leave the space.
Misinformation Challenge: Dispelling Wrong Facts
Another concerning trend I noticed was the spread of misinformation about vaping. Some students believe that using vapes (nicotine or no-nic) are harmless. It’s crucial to address this misconception. Let’s set the record straight – vaping is not good for you. The best advice I can give is JUST BREATHE AIR. Let’s be smart about our health and not be misled by false information.
Council’s Decision to Address the Issue
After sharing my experiences and concerns with the Ward 10 Youth Council, we collectively decided to address this issue. Our advocacy extended beyond the formal settings, with a commitment to creating awareness about the challenges faced by students in their daily school lives.
Advocacy Through Authentic Conversations & Support
The Ward 10 Youth Council focused on spreading awareness through word of mouth, bringing attention to the struggles faced by students who encounter uncomfortable situations in school washrooms. Despite our efforts, the situation hasn’t seen significant improvement. The reality is that youth today must make decisions for themselves, and our role is to support them in getting there. I believe it is important to surround yourself with individuals who genuinely care for your well-bring. Having a supportive network can help you navigate challenges.
Empowering Youth: Tips for Advocacy
For youth eager to get involved in advocacy, my advice is to seek opportunities within your school or community. Embrace the learning process, engage in authentic conversations, and address specific issues affecting your daily life. By sharing your experiences, you contribute to the collective effort of creating safer and healthier environments for our generation.
I’m excited to be part of the Unfiltered Facts community, where we can work together to dispel myths, share truths, and empower youth to advocate for change.
