Taking a Stand Against Teen Vaping

Hi! I’m Charlize, a proud member of the Stoney Creek Ward 10 Youth Council. I’m driven by a passion for making a positive impact in our community. This past year, we have been tackling the issue of teen vaping. We drafted a letter outlining our concerns and recommendations to Mayor Horwath and the Hamilton City Council. We asked for stricter regulations and increased awareness of the dangers of teen vaping.

In partnership with Councillor Jeff Beattie and Hamilton Public Health Services, we also went to community events like the Winona Peach Festival to spread awareness about the risks of vaping.

Our efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Our letter to Hamilton City Council received media attention and a positive response from City Council. They supported our cause and expressed a willingness to collaborate further with relevant partners, including school boards and the Province of Ontario, to help reduce youth vaping.

This experience has taught me valuable lessons in communication, teamwork, and understanding the legislative process. It’s empowering to see how our voices, as youth, can influence meaningful change. For those considering advocacy, my advice is to persevere, even in the face of challenges. Speaking up for what you believe in is important, and so is seeking support from others.

One thing I learned about are the deceptive tactics used by the vaping industry to target youth. Despite industry efforts to glamorize vaping, it is important to learn the truth and reject their harmful products. To reduce teen vaping, we must continue to advocate for stronger regulations, provide education, and promote healthier habits and activities.

Personally, I find fulfillment in extracurricular activities like swimming, running, and cycling. I also participate in team sports like water polo and soccer, attend music concerts, and engage in community service. These activities contribute to my well-being and provide a sense of purpose.

With so much misinformation about vaping, it is essential for teens to know the facts and develop critical thinking skills. By questioning misleading claims and seeking out reliable information, we can effectively fight back against the industry and make informed decisions for our health.

Together with community partners, I hope to raise awareness, advocate for solutions, and pave the way towards a healthier, brighter future for youth in our community.
